Australian Army tries cold jet 3D printing technology to repair submarine

Recently, the Royal Australian Navy is studying "cold jet 3D printing" technology, hoping that it can be used to repair the Collins class attack submarine equipped by the navy. This technology will allow submarine components to be repaired while sailing at sea, and even repair the submarine's pressure-resistant shell.
At present, the more popular metal 3D printing technology is to stack metal powders by welding. The difference between "cold jet 3D printing" is the stacking of metal powder materials by supersonic airflow sandblasting, which allows metal particles to attach to any surface to form a hardened solid metal.
The use of "cold jet 3D printing" in the maintenance of metal ships is safer than welding, it does not generate flames, and therefore does not ignite flammable gases such as hydrogen, which is crucial for submarines. The internal space of the submarine is small, and it is easy to cause an explosion or suffocate people when performing maintenance operations inside the submarine. The use of this technology also does not require storage of flammable welding gas. The current "cold jet" technology uses non-flammable nitrogen.
In addition, from an engineering perspective, "cold jet 3D printing" is better than welding in some ways. Welding will damage the strength of the cold-rolled steel, and the strength of the cold-rolled steel determines the pressure resistance of the submarine. The dive depth of submarines repaired with welding technology may be limited. "Cold jet 3D printing" does not heat the metal surface, so it will not damage the cold rolled steel.
Another advantage of "Cold Jet 3D Printing" is that damaged parts can be repaired on ships. According to a report on the "Navy Today" website, the Australian government is developing portable repair equipment that can be carried on the submarine. The submarine is good at long-distance operations, and simple repairs must return to the port. The submarine will lose days or even weeks of deployment time. . "Cold jet 3D printing" technology allows submarines to complete repairs during the voyage without having to travel hundreds or even thousands of miles to shipyard for repairs.
If Australia can apply "cold jet 3D printing" technology to submarines, this technology is likely to be popularized by troops from other countries.
