The key reason is cost. The plastic is too cheap, the production process is too mature, and the amount of use is too large. According to the analysis, the price of bioplastics (PHA) produced according to the current process is about 3 to 10 times that of ordinary polyethylene and polypropylene.

Therefore, in order to make bioplastics popular, it is necessary to reduce the cost, that is, "how to cheaply fertilize certain microorganisms."

Tsinghua University's "College of Life Sciences" and "Changjiang Scholars" Distinguished Professor Chen Guoqiang led a young team to find suitable strains and use the emerging "synthetic biology" technology to reconstruct the PHA production process and achieve total production costs.
