German material supplier Covestro and its partners have developed an environmentally-friendly, high-performance thermoplastic called “super plasticâ€.
This material was developed by a research project coordinated and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and is said to be suitable for a range of industries including aerospace, automotive and pharmaceuticals.
Costron said on September 11 that the plastic has stable properties, high hardness, heat resistance and resistance to various solvents. The test batch has been produced.
As part of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research's research project “Dream Compound Contiâ€, a continuous process will now be developed to enable industrial-scale environmental compatibility and economic production.
Covestro called "super plastic" to make breakthrough progress
Superplastic claims to be suitable for many industries, including aerospace, automotive and pharmaceuticals
Covestro is working with Aachen University of Technology, the Technical University of Berlin, the Leipzig Plastics Center and the aircraft manufacturer Airbus to work on the project.
In the next three years, the project will receive 1.5 million euros in funding.
“Through this new joint project, we are working hard to produce ultra-high performance plastics in a climate-friendly and cost-effective process,†explains Markus Steilemann, CEO of Covestro.
A special feature of this material is that its production is based on "easy-to-access basic chemicals."
For example, such materials have been used to produce foam and do not need to be developed specifically for this purpose.
A new catalyst system was then deployed to produce HPT using basic chemicals.
Costron says that compared to traditional high-performance thermoplastics, complex process steps are no longer needed, so carbon emissions can be reduced and energy can be saved.
The initial life cycle assessment of the Aachen University of Technology for industrial manufacturing processes shows that HPT produces more than 20% less greenhouse gas emissions than similar thermoplastics.
In addition, new continuous processes being researched by project partners require less solvent than traditional processes.
