Focus on the steel industry in 2011: cost and price

In 2010, China's steel production costs rose, economic benefits declined, and the steel industry faced a severe living environment. In order to analyze the production and operation situation of the steel industry in 2011, the Raw Materials Industry Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the China Iron and Steel Industry Association jointly held the “2011 Steel Production and Operation Expectation Target Symposium” in Beijing on December 30, 2010. Jia Yinsong, inspector of the raw materials department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and Wu Xiyu, honorary president of the China Iron and Steel Association, attended the meeting.

China Steel Association Secretary-General Shan Shanghua said that in 2010, steel production and operation encountered unprecedented difficulties. As the price of raw fuel rose sharply, the profit margin of steel enterprises was at the lowest level in the national industrial field, which was less than half of the national industrial average. . It is estimated that the total profit of key national steel enterprises in 2010 will be about 85 billion yuan, of which the investment income will be nearly 8 billion yuan, the profit of other steel production main business will be only 77 billion yuan, and the profit of Baosteel will be 24 billion yuan, accounting for the national large and medium-sized steel enterprises. Nearly one-third, if we deduct the profit of steel joint ventures, many steel companies are actually losing money.

Shan Shanghua said that in 2011, the market for steel demand was not optimistic, and it is very difficult to maintain the growth rate in 2010. In 2011, the prices of raw materials such as iron ore and coking coal will remain at a high level, and production and operation of enterprises will be more difficult.

Jia Yinsong pointed out that the economic situation in 2011 will be a complicated and difficult year. In economic development, it will face problems such as inflation, employment, foreign trade and investment. In 2011, the Raw Materials Division will focus on six aspects of work in the steel industry. First, implement the spirit of the document “Several Opinions of the General Office of the State Council on Further Strengthening Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction to Accelerate Structural Adjustment of the Iron and Steel Industry” (Guo Ban Fa [2010] No. 34). Continue to prepare the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan". The second is to promote the merger and reorganization of steel companies. Third, continue to promote the implementation of steel production and operation norms. Fourth, continue to increase efforts to eliminate backward work. The fifth is to do a good job in securing iron ore strategic resources. Sixth, continue to do a good job in the economic operation analysis of the steel industry. In general, the steel industry must seize market opportunities, transform growth patterns, accelerate structural adjustment, and promote industrial upgrading.

Wu Xiyu expects that the annual crude steel output in 2010 will be around 630 million tons, an increase of 10.9%. He said that in 2011, the steel industry should focus on a few issues: First, the price trend of the steel market. In 2011, the degree of excess strip and strip will increase, focusing on the price of sheet and strip. Second, the price shock of iron ore, coking coal and sea freight will increase, and the risk will be great. The third is to change the development model, and shift the main focus of development from the expansion of production capacity to the construction of upstream and downstream industrial chains, and to the benefits of variety, quality, procurement, sales, management and capital operation, to combat the rise in production costs.

Participants also discussed the expected production targets and elimination and new capacity of major products in 2011; analysis of steel export situation and export arrangements in 2011; problems and measures in raw fuel supply and marketing; major problems encountered in production and operation of enterprises , industrial restructuring measures and recommendations.
