The reporter learned on the 21st from the 502 Institute of the China Academy of Aerospace Science and Technology that the first set of domestic low-power Hall electric propulsion system independently developed by the institute has recently been successfully fired on orbit at the launch star of Galaxy Aerospace (Beijing) Technology Co., Ltd. For the first time in China, the on-orbit application of the low-power Hall electric propulsion system has been realized.
The launch star of Galaxy Space was launched on January 16 this year. It is equipped with a low-power Hall electric propulsion system with a rated power of 215 watts and a rated thrust of 10 mN. At 21:44:37 on June 15, the system successfully fired on orbit for the first time. As of June 17, a total of 8 fires were performed on orbit, with a cumulative ignition duration of more than 10,000 seconds. The system is directly oriented to small satellite applications, and has the characteristics of small size, light weight, and flexible application, which is in line with current international aerospace application trends. This is also the first successful in-orbit application of a domestic electric propulsion system on a commercial satellite.
According to the person in charge of the project of 502 Institute, the development of the electric propulsion system overcomes a number of highly integrated designs, lightweight high specific impulse Hall electric propulsion, lightweight high voltage power supply, high precision miniaturized propellant storage and supply, etc. The key technology only took less than a year to complete the integrated delivery of the product from the prototype to the flying parts. In the meantime, the institute also broke the original development model of the propulsion system through concept innovation and process optimization, including the parallel development of propulsion system integration and the whole star assembly, the completion of xenon working fluid filling before leaving the factory, etc., which optimized the launch site workflow and shortened The development cycle has been explored, and a new way has been explored for the mass production of small-power Hall electric propulsion systems.
It is understood that the electric propulsion system can realize the functions of orbit adjustment, large-scale orbit transfer, and long-term orbit maintenance. It will also be used in the end of the life of the satellite to actively deorbit in the future to avoid space debris.
The low-power Hall electric propulsion system has broad commercial prospects. This type of propulsion technology is selected for low-orbit satellite Internet constellation projects at home and abroad. It can also be used for satellite missions such as low-orbit navigation and low-orbit remote sensing.
