With the increasing awareness of consumers' environmental protection and the implementation of more stringent automotive emission standards around the world, innovations in the automotive engine industry are endless, the benefits of new materials have been highlighted, and tooling techniques for new material processing are constantly being used. development of. Sandvik Coromant has always been committed to the development of new products and the application of new processes, making the application of new materials possible.
In order to improve the combustion efficiency of diesel and reduce exhaust emissions, diesel engine blocks need to be able to withstand higher pressures and heat. Gray cast iron (GCI), which is traditionally used to produce engine blocks, cannot meet these new requirements. Therefore, a new material called compacted graphite iron (CGI) began to be used. This material is mainly used in the manufacture of engine blocks, cylinder heads and bearing cap castings for large diesel trucks.
Vermicular graphite cast iron is a new material produced during the conversion process from gray cast iron to ductile cast iron. As shown in Figure 1, spherical and turbulent structures are the main features. The characteristics of vermicular graphite iron are that it has the durability of ductile iron and the heat resistance of gray cast iron. Because the weight of vermicular graphite cast iron is half that of traditional gray cast iron, it has higher fuel efficiency for automobiles. In addition, it can design an engine block with a thinner wall thickness. An assembled vermicular cast iron engine weighs about 9% less than a gray cast iron engine.
