They fished out some fishing lines, plastic bags and plastic knots to observe under an electron microscope and found that bacteria-like cells lived in small pits on these plastic surfaces as if they were swallowing plastic. “They are stuck in plastic, like hot coals are thrown into the snow.” According to Guther, although microbes that could digest plastics were found in landfills, it was the first time that microbes that could break down plastics were found on the sea. This also helps explain why pollution continues and the amount of marine debris can be balanced.
