According to a recent report by the Nikkei Index, Sony is developing a smartphone battery based on sulphur compounds that can be used up to 40% after one charge. Sulfur batteries have also been considered in the industry before, but the main problem is that the battery capacity drops too quickly after each charge. The main reason is that the electrodes dissolve into the electrolyte.
The Nikkei believes that Sony has successfully solved this problem and is currently conducting safety inspections and developing methods for large-scale production. Japanese newspapers believe that Sony’s sulfur-based battery won’t be available until 2020 at the earliest, so the last few days have seen no significant increase in the battery life of smartphones.
However, if the Sony sulfur battery can really extend the use time by 40%, the continuous browsing time of the iPhone 6S equipped with a sulfur battery can be extended to as much as 14 hours. We can see this on the iPhone 9 Long-term battery life.
