Researchers develop fluid-based power system for flying taxis

Many cities are striving to develop alternatives to mass transportation for private cars driven on public roads. Congestion makes it difficult for many people to travel in some of the largest cities in the United States, prompting the development of concepts involving underground and surface public transportation. However, when it comes to "flying taxis", the current technology still has great limitations.

Researchers at Purdue University have developed a fluid power system for autonomous pilot aircraft (AAV), which has a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) function. These "air taxis" will provide the public with alternatives to land vehicles for relatively short-distance travel in the air rather than on the highway.

The current state of VTOL self-piloting aircraft technology has some great limitations, that is, heavy components occupy a considerable weight, reducing the weight of the aircraft payload. According to the university, the newly developed fluid power technology provides a recyclable and inexpensive alternative to hydraulic propulsion systems.

The system is designed for vertical take-off and landing aircraft with a multi-rotor design-the speed of each rotor can be individually controlled by the system, which uses a hydrostatic transmission to distribute the power of the engine to the rotors. According to the researchers, the system can provide the necessary pneumatic lift and height control.

Lizhi Shang, one of the project ’s researchers, explained:

The key advantage of this innovation is its light weight, which can translate into superior payload fraction, lower operating costs, longer flight distance, and better controllability and operability. In order to transmit the same power through precise speed control, the hydraulic system is much lighter than the power system currently dominating the market.
