It takes only one photo and 15 minutes of production time to build the wax hand, but it takes 30 days to prepare, including testing more than 2,500 photos. Researchers say they can use photos taken from a distance of 5 meters. Therefore, even if there is no direct access to this person's identity for authentication, resource-rich hackers can manage to use cheap off-the-shelf tools.
Currently, no mainstream smartphones use vein authentication. The technology is more commonly used to control access to buildings such as the German Signal Intelligence Agency. In a statement provided to Heise Online, a Fujitsu spokesperson tried to downplay the meaning of hacking and stated that it can only succeed under laboratory conditions and that it cannot play a role in the real world.
